What is Food Security?

What is Food Security?

Food Security exists when all community members have economic and physical access to safe, personally acceptable food that is produced through a sustainable food system that maximizes healthy choices, community self-reliance and equal access for everyone.

Economic access to food means that community members have access food in a dignified way and have enough money to purchase food at healthy food retail.  It is the basis of food security and healthy eating. To ensure economic access:

  • People are able to earn a living wage no matter what their circumstance is, working or not.
  • Housing is affordable

Physical Access to food means that our communities are well equipped with:

  • Healthy food retail: Grocery stores, farmers’ markets, farm gates sales
  • Community gardens
  • Edible landscapes
  • Community kitchens
  • Productive agricultural land
  • Farmers
  • Transportation systems
  • Food production that protects the environment

Physical access contributes to food self-sufficiency, which protects us from possible threats of relying on the global food system.
